This allowed me to move the screen further away from the base. I can't really tell you which I disconnected, but they were the chunkier cables that seemed easy enough to reconnect. I put mine face down on some plastic bags to keep dust off. The magnets holding the glass in place let go quite easily once you have one side lifted off and the glass is thick and strong, so no risk of it cracking in the middle. I was too scared to force down the lever over the suction cups for fear of smashing the glass but found it lifted out very easily by applying the lever about half way and gently pulling upward on one side.

I would also highly recommend that you use as clean and dust-free an environment as possible, with no fans, AC or windows open which might kick up dust. I'd personally try and track down the service manual for the machine, rather than try to follow the iFixIt Guides, as they're not exactly perfect, IMO. If that gives you no joy, then you can certainly replace the HD yourself if you're careful the ordeal isn't that difficult, other than cleaning the glass and LCD - they'll attract more dust that you ever knew existed in your apartment. Although your AppleCare has run out, give AppleCare a call anyway - chances are they'll smile on you as you're only a little way out of coverage.
